Originally native to the Molucca island of Indonesia nutmeg was once so highly coveted, early traders tried to keep its location a secret. In the 16th century Portugal, Holland and England fought for control of the remote islands as nutmeg was said to be more precious than gold. Today it grows in many tropical countries. The nut comes from a bitter fruit that looks like a yellow nectarine. It is dried and the outer shell is removed leaving the nutmeg we know and love. The volatile oils that give nutmeg its flavor are strong but evaporate quickly. It is ideal to grind it fresh.
Suggested uses - its sweet woody flavor works well in both savory and sweet dishes. Sprinkle on spinach or a pinch to a banana milkshake
