Galangal is a member of the ginger family and is native to Java and southeast Asia. Its taste is similar to ginger but a little more fruity and sharper with perfumed notes. An enthusiastic sniff will reveal it’s nasal-clearing properties. Galangal is an essential ingredient in Thai curries and dishes such as Tom Yum Soup. If you can't get your Thai food to taste right try adding a little Galangal. Galangal also helps neutralize overly fishy flavors and is therefore used in many seafood recipes.
Suggested uses: It is used like ginger. It is a key ingredient in the Moroccan spice blend ras el hangout and in the traditional Indonesian rise dish, Nasi Goreng.
